Bamboo Flooring in Dubai — Strand-Woven, Hard-Wearing & Renewable

What we do and who it is for

We supply and install bamboo floors for villas, apartments and offices, and for landlords who want a warm, hardwood-style floor that is not a standard oak. Most of our bamboo work is living rooms, hallways, bedrooms and home offices. We handle the whole job: choosing the grade, checking the subfloor, preparing it, acclimatising the boards, laying them and finishing the edges and thresholds.

If you are still choosing between materials, we will say plainly when bamboo is the wrong fit for a room, for example anywhere water may stand on the floor.

Grades and construction

Not all bamboo is equal, and the construction decides how the floor performs.

• Strand-woven. Shredded fibres compressed with resin under high pressure. It is dense, typically harder than many traditional hardwoods, and resists scratches and dents. It is the grade we recommend for living areas, hallways and homes with children or pets.
• Horizontal and vertical. A softer construction that suits lighter-use rooms such as bedrooms.
• Engineered bamboo. A bamboo wear layer over a stable core. It is the more dimensionally stable choice over concrete and where the air conditioning runs most of the year.

Bamboo is technically a grass, not a tree, and it matures far faster than the timber it resembles. That makes it a credible option for clients who want a renewable material, as long as the supplier can show where the product comes from.

Finishes and looks

• Natural keeps the pale, light tone.
• Carbonised is heat-treated to a warmer amber-brown. It is slightly softer, so we usually pair a carbonised look with strand-woven construction in busy areas.
• Stained options are available for a darker or more neutral tone.

Strand-woven boards have a tight grain with fine linear figuring. The look is contemporary rather than rustic, and it takes matte and brushed finishes well.

Dubai considerations

Bamboo expands and contracts with moisture like wood, and Dubai swings between humid outdoor air and cool, dry air conditioning. Three things keep a bamboo floor stable here:

• Choose strand-woven or engineered boards for dimensional stability.
• Acclimatise the boards on site before fitting, so they have already adjusted to your interior climate.
• Lay the correct moisture barrier over the subfloor, and leave the expansion allowance at the edges.

Bamboo is not for bathrooms, laundry rooms or other wet zones. For those areas see vinyl flooring. Strong sun through large glazing can slowly change the tone of any natural floor, so curtains or blinds help in south and west rooms.

Subfloor, underlay and fitting methods

• Floating boards click together over an underlay. It is clean and quick, and suits lighter-use rooms.
• Glue-down bonds the board to the screed. It is quiet and stable, and the usual method for engineered bamboo over concrete.
• Secret-nailing suits solid strand-woven boards over a timber subfloor or battens.

Whichever method is used, the subfloor must be level, dry and sound. We check it before any board is opened, and bamboo still needs expansion room because it moves with the seasons.

How the job runs

1. Site visit. We look at the rooms, the subfloor and how the space is used, and talk through grade and finish.
2. Quote. You receive a fixed quote covering supply, subfloor preparation and fitting.
3. Subfloor preparation. We level where needed and lay the moisture barrier and underlay.
4. Acclimatisation. The boards sit in the rooms until they have adjusted to the interior climate.
5. Fitting. Boards are laid by the method chosen, with expansion gaps and neat thresholds.
6. Handover. We clean up and explain care: soft vacuum, a barely damp mop, no soaking and no steam, and felt pads under furniture.

What drives the cost

We price bamboo floors by the project, because the same room can be done in several ways. The main factors are:

• the grade and construction, since strand-woven usually sits above horizontal or vertical bamboo;
• the finish and the supplier range;
• the floor area and the layout of the rooms;
• the state of the subfloor and how much preparation it needs;
• the fitting method, and whether skirting, thresholds or removal of an old floor are included.
