Gunite or shotcrete

Both are sprayed concrete over a steel cage. The difference is where the water is added.

  • Shotcrete is a wet mix. Concrete is batched with water, then pumped and sprayed, which gives consistent batched strength.
  • Gunite is a dry mix. Dry material travels through a hose and water is added at the nozzle, which gives the operator more control on detailed, vertical and complex shapes.

Either produces a strong, continuous shell when a skilled crew applies it. We specify the method to suit the design and the site.

Finishes

  • Mosaic or porcelain tile is the most premium and hard-wearing option.
  • Polished plaster gives a classic, smooth look.
  • Quartz or pebble aggregate is a more economical, textured finish.
  • Rendered and painted is the simplest option.

Site, structure and Dubai considerations

A concrete pool is designed for a specific plot, not chosen from a catalogue. We look at soil conditions and, where they call for it, arrange a geotechnical assessment. The structure has to allow for ground movement, water-table pressure and the extreme summer heat that Dubai plots see, and pool decks and finishes need to stay comfortable underfoot in strong sun.

Access matters too. Excavation, spraying equipment and concrete deliveries need a route to the garden, and some community plots are tight. We check this at the site visit.

Approvals

Depending on the location, a pool typically needs:

  • a community or developer NOC;
  • approval from Dubai Municipality or Trakhees/DDA;
  • a DEWA NOC for electrical and plumbing connections;
  • Civil Defence sign-off where required.

How the job runs

  1. Site visit. We look at the plot, access, levels and the style you have in mind.
  2. Design and quote. You receive engineered drawings and a fixed quote.
  3. Approvals. Submissions run alongside design, and construction starts once they are in place.
  4. Excavation and steel. The pit is dug and the reinforcement cage is tied.
  5. Sprayed shell and curing. The concrete shell is sprayed, then left to cure properly before anything else is applied.
  6. Waterproofing and finish. The shell is waterproofed, then tiled, plastered or finished in aggregate.
  7. Plant and commissioning. Plumbing, filtration and equipment are installed and the pool is commissioned.

The build takes longer than a fibreglass pool because of the curing stage, and the total depends on size, design and approvals.
