How an infinity pool works

  • The vanishing or weir edge is built just lower than the water level.
  • Water spills continuously over it into a concealed catch basin.
  • It flows to a balance tank, is filtered and is pumped back through floor and wall inlets.

The water you see is the surface of a constantly recirculating system, which is why an infinity pool needs far more engineering than a standard pool.

The edge, basin and balance tank

  • The edge. The spill line must be perfectly level along its full length. Even a small deviation shows as an uneven, dribbling overflow, and holding that level through construction, curing and settlement is the hardest part of the build. Darker edge finishes are often chosen because the water reads more dramatically as it tips over.
  • The catch basin. It sits below the weir and connects to the balance tank.
  • The balance tank. It has to be large enough to hold the surge when several people enter at once, plus the water moving over the edge. An undersized tank is a common, visible failure, because the edge stops flowing cleanly under load. We calculate tank volume to the pool's size and expected use.

Pumps and hydraulics

An infinity pool keeps lifting water over the edge and pushing it back from a lower tank, so it needs higher-capacity circulation than a standard pool, often with redundancy. Wrong hydraulics show up as a weak edge or cloudy water. We design pumps, pipework and inlets as one system.

Siting, structure and Dubai considerations

An infinity edge only delivers where there is a drop and a view beyond it: a slope, podium, rooftop or terrace overlooking the skyline, sea or desert. On a flat plot with a wall behind it, the effect is largely lost. At the site visit we will tell you honestly if your plot suits it, or if the budget is better spent elsewhere.

The structure carries extra load from a raised or cantilevered edge, the balance tank and level changes, so it needs careful structural and geotechnical engineering. Dubai adds strong sun and heat on exposed edges and wind that carries spray, so water loss and surround materials are part of the design conversation. Infinity pools are built in reinforced concrete (gunite or shotcrete), because a moulded fibreglass shell rarely suits a true vanishing edge on a custom site.

Approvals

Typically a project needs a community or developer NOC, approval from Dubai Municipality or Trakhees/DDA, and a DEWA NOC for electrical and plumbing. How the job runs

  1. Site visit. We assess your view, levels, structure and access.
  2. Design and quote. You receive engineered drawings, including the edge, basin and tank, and a fixed quote.
  3. Approvals. Submissions run alongside design.
  4. Excavation and structure. The pit, steel and shell are formed, with the edge set out to exact levels.
  5. Waterproofing and finish. The structure is waterproofed and finished, including the weir and basin.
  6. Plant and commissioning. Pumps, tank and filtration are installed, and the overflow is tuned and tested.

A moulded fibreglass shell is limited for this and rarely suits a genuine infinity edge on a custom site, so we build infinity pools in concrete.
